General information

A tummy tuck for men is a surgical procedure to remove excess skin and tighten the abdominal region. It is mainly used when significant excess skin has developed after major weight loss, long-term weight fluctuations or with age. The aim is a flat, firm and clearly defined abdomen that suits the masculine body shape.

Diagnosis and indication

A tummy tuck is indicated if skin laxity is so pronounced that it cannot sufficiently regress through sport or liposuction. Typical findings are hanging skin folds in the lower abdomen, loss of abdominal contour and functional complaints such as skin irritation. A stable body weight and completed weight loss are required.

Who is the procedure suitable for?

Well suited for

  • significant excess skin on the abdomen, e.g. after major weight loss
  • completed weight loss and stable weight
  • non-smoker or willing to stop smoking before and after surgery

Rather not, or only later

  • weight loss still ongoing
  • severe obesity
  • smokers who cannot pause (significantly higher risk of wound-healing problems)

Before surgery

Before the procedure there is a detailed medical consultation and examination. It is assessed how pronounced the excess skin is and whether additional liposuction makes sense. Where the scar will run and what result is realistically achievable are discussed. Instructions on preparing for surgery, in particular avoiding nicotine and physical rest, are part of the planning.

Surgical method

In a tummy tuck, excess skin is removed and the remaining skin is tightened. Depending on the findings, the abdominal muscles can also be tightened. The procedure is often combined with liposuction to create harmonious transitions to the flanks. The incision is placed so that the scar lies as inconspicuously as possible in the underwear or swimwear area.

Anaesthesia, duration and stay

A tummy tuck is usually performed under general anaesthesia. The operation takes about two to four hours, depending on the extent. In most cases a hospital stay of one to two nights is advisable.

After surgery

After the procedure, swelling, bruising and a feeling of tightness in the abdomen are normal. A compression garment must be worn for several weeks. Physical rest is particularly important; heavy lifting and sport should be avoided for several weeks.

Recovery & result

Healing is gradual. Swelling subsides over several weeks. The final result shows after a few months, once skin and tissue have fully adapted. The abdomen looks clearly flatter, firmer and more masculine.

Risks and possible complications

In addition to general surgical risks, wound-healing problems, seromas or scar changes may occur. Careful surgical planning and consistent aftercare are crucial to minimise risks.

Summary

A tummy tuck for men is an effective procedure for a lasting improvement of the abdominal contour when there is pronounced excess skin. A stable weight and realistic expectations are required for a good result.

Frequently asked questions

How long is the scar?

The scar runs across the lower abdomen, usually from hip to hip, low enough to be covered by underwear or swimwear. It fades over 12–18 months.

Can diastasis recti be treated at the same time?

Yes, if the straight abdominal muscles have separated, the doctor can stitch them back together during the tummy tuck.

How long will I be restricted?

For the first few days you walk slightly bent forward. You should avoid heavy lifting and sport for about 6–8 weeks.

Do I need liposuction beforehand?

Both are often combined so that flanks and abdomen blend harmoniously. The doctor clarifies this during planning.
