General information
Gynaecomastia is an enlargement of the male breast and can be very distressing for those affected, both psychologically and physically. It often occurs during puberty, with hormonal changes, weight fluctuations or with age. The aim of surgical treatment is a flat, masculine chest contour that blends harmoniously into the upper body.
Diagnosis and indication
Surgical treatment is indicated if there is a clear breast enlargement that does not regress through sport or weight loss. A distinction is made between true gynaecomastia (glandular tissue) and pseudogynaecomastia (fatty tissue). Often it is a mixed form. The exact diagnosis is decisive for choosing the surgical method.
Who is the procedure suitable for?
Well suited for
- Men with an enlarged chest due to glandular or fatty tissue
- Findings that do not regress despite training and weight loss
- stable body weight and good general health
Rather not, or only later
- ongoing weight loss
- unexplained hormonal cause (have it checked by a doctor first)
- use of anabolic steroids or medication that can cause gynaecomastia
Before surgery
Before the procedure, a medical examination is carried out to determine the type of tissue and any hormonal causes. It is decided whether liposuction alone is sufficient or whether glandular tissue also needs to be removed. Incisions, scar position and a realistic result are discussed in detail.
Surgical method
Depending on the findings, treatment is carried out by liposuction, gland removal or a combination of both. The incisions are small and usually placed inconspicuously around the nipple. The aim is a firm, masculine chest shape without visible transitions.
Anaesthesia, duration and stay
The operation is usually performed under general anaesthesia or twilight sedation. It takes about one to two hours. The procedure can be done as an outpatient or with a short hospital stay.
After surgery
After the procedure, a compression garment must be worn for several weeks. Swelling and bruising are normal. Sports activities should be paused temporarily.
Risks and possible complications
In addition to general surgical risks such as bleeding, infection or thrombosis, seromas (fluid collections), temporary numbness of the nipple, dents or slight asymmetries may occur. If there is a lot of excess skin, additional tightening may be necessary. Careful planning, compression garments and aftercare reduce these risks.
Result & summary
The result is permanent and often clearly improves self-confidence. The male chest looks flat, defined and natural.

Frequently asked questions
Is the result permanent?
Removed glandular tissue usually does not grow back. With significant weight gain, anabolic steroids or certain medications, tissue can form again.
Will the scars be visible?
The incisions are usually at the edge of the areola and are generally inconspicuous once healed. If additional tightening is done, the scars are longer.
When can I go back to the gym?
Light cardio often after 2–3 weeks, chest and strength training usually after 4–6 weeks, after consulting the doctor.
Does health insurance pay?
In exceptional cases for true, medically justified gynaecomastia and with prior approval. For surgery abroad, cost coverage is rare.
